Tuklas Cavite - City of Imus
City of Imus
History
Imus used to be a “visita” of Cavite Viejo, is one of the oldest administrative units of Cavite. Cavite Viejo was under the administration of the Jesuits until 1686 when the Recollects took over Imus. Efforts were then directed in seeking emancipation from the ecclesiastical and civil administration of Cavite Viejo, until Imus was completely liberated.
The ecclesiastical land that tied Imus to Cavite Viejo since the early part of the 17th century was covered by the Royal Order of October 30, 1776. This Royal Decree was considered as the first step in the creation of the Municipality of Imus.
On May 28, 1898, Imus gained its independence from Spanish colonial rule after the last remaining stronghold of forces from the Spanish empire had been defeated in the Battle of Alapan as headed by General Emilio Aguinaldo. This battle led to the Philippine Declaration of Independence in Kawit, Cavite June 12, 1898. The modern flag of the Philippines was first unfurled in victory during this battle as they march their way to the present day Cavite City, together with the captured forces of Spain. In commemoration of the event, A Battle of Alapan marker was constructed inside the compound of Alapan Elementary School May 28, 1998 and was inaugurated by President Fidel V. Ramos. Although, May 28, 2014, a new marker and the Imus National Heritage Park were inaugurated at Barangay Alapan 2-A to make the initially constructed marker more accessible to the public.
Imus was the site of two major Katipunero victories during the Philippine Revolution against Spain. The Battle of Imus was fought on September 3, 1896 and the Battle of Alapan, on May 28, 1898, the day when the first Philippine flag was flown making Imus the "Flag Capital of the Philippines".

Notable people
General Licerio Topacio
Licerio Topacio was the eldest of the Magdalo present. In deference to his age he must have been considered by the group for nomination as president of the revolutionary Government to be established. But he declined because he was too old (58) and that the presidency needed a younger, stronger man.
Born in Imus, Cavite, on August 27, 1839, to Miguel Topacio, a former gobernadorcillo, and Marta Cuenca, the young Licerio finished his studies in Imus. He was not able to pursue higher education in Manila. But he kept on developing his inborn talent by self-study, and when the Revolution broke out he showed exceptional leadership in battle.
