The municipality of Ternate was founded in 1663 when  the Spanish Garrison of Ternate were forced to defend the the City of Manila from an incoming Chinese invasion to the city. A number of Merdicas volunteered to help and all throughout they resettled near the mouth of the Bahra de Maragondon also known as Maragondon River.

Eventually the name of the Municipality of Ternate is after the name of an island found in Indonesia where the descendants of the Merdicas originates and integrated with the locals during the Spanish colonial period.
